Where on earth did last month go; it feels like August disappeared in a heartbeat and I’m not entirely sure what I got up to?! Well, to be fair I do know, I basically worked and not much else this month if I’m honest, which isn’t the end of the world I know. I started to work with a lovely new client which is always fun, but I have to say that I utterly failed at achieving anything like a work life balance so really need to work on that this month.
On the fun side of things, I had a fab weekend in the Hunter Valley celebrating a friend’s 40th birthday. It was child-free bliss (the boys stayed with a friend), we laughed until we cried, drank our bodies’ weight in wine and had an absolute ball!
On the beauty front, July was all about playing with my fave eyeshadow palettes and nude lips but last month was far more colourful and I’ve really enjoyed my new Charlotte Tilbury coral lippies (Sexy Sienna and Coachella Coral) and an old fave Amazing Grace.
It’s been all about glowy skin this month and I’ve been having a real love-in with liquid highlighters, reaching for Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter and L’Oréal Mon Amour Highlighting Drops every day over the many (many!) powder highlighters that I have in my stash. I just love the pretty, subtle (expensive looking) sheen that they give which are so flattering on a more mature skin. Both give a golden glow, so I was also very excited to add Mecca Max’s Liquid Light in Opal to my collection, which is a molten, silvery pink hue; it’s very different to what I currently own and really pretty on my fair skin.
On the base front, I also bought and have absolutely fallen in love with bareMinerals BarePRO 16-Hr Full Coverage Concealer. It’s a beautifully creamy formula that gives great coverage; I love that it comes in a handy little stick and that you only need a few swipes and you’re done. It reminds me of a Bobbi Brown one that I used for years and years and I haven’t used any other concealer since buying this which says something!
I’ve also been enjoying experimenting with mascaras this month and have some new favourites that I’ve been telling all my friends about. I will do a dedicated blog post when I’ve tested them properly – I like to test mascara for a good 3/4 weeks before giving my final verdict as I find that it can make a real difference when they start to dry out a little and I typically prefer them – but so far so good though and I’m absolutely loving Hourglass’ new Caution mascara for volumising lashes with one lazy swipe and Nars’ Climax for a more everyday flutter. It has smudged a little on me, so I will report back on that when I’ve tried it out a little longer.
Staying with eyes, I’ve also got back into my brows as I’ve been crap and not bothered to do anything with them for months. I have almost invisible, pale auburn/blonde eyebrows (very attractive!) so adding a bit of colour makes a huge difference and I’ve no idea why I stopped paying attention to them as they really do shape and balance your face. I was a firm Benefit Gimme Brow user before the recall – and really need to remember to get a new one – but in the interim have been enjoying two old school favourites: MAC Fling Eye Brows Styler and Omega shadow which I apply with my trusty MAC 266 brush.
And on the non-beauty front, I’ve got a great new TV show to tell you about and a new piece of jewellery that I haven’t taken off. Firstly, I have been thoroughly enjoying Happy Valley with the wonderful Sarah Lancashire; it’s a gritty crime show set in Yorkshire in the U.K and follows Sergeant Catherine Cawood and a brutal kidnapping that brings back awful memories for her as it involves the man who raped her daughter. It’s very real and such a nice change from the glossy US prosecutorial shows that saturate Stan and Netflix and we’ve ploughed through Season 1 already. I thoroughly recommend!
And last but certainly not least is my pressie from me to me this month; my necklace from Zeal & Heart with the mantra ‘more, as well as enough’. I’ll talk a bit more about her in an upcoming post about my favourite bloggers, but Laura Jane Williams, a writer and one of my favourite Instagrammers, collaborated with the brand to create 100 necklaces. ‘More, as well as enough’ is her mantra for this year and I nabbed one as it really resonated with me and has become my focus: making sure that I have enough of what I need but if there’s more on offer, being brave enough to grab it with both hands!
So that’s my August in a nutshell. September is already looking to be hectic with work so my focus this month is on writing beautiful copy and content for my clients but also making sure that I make time for the boys and myself so that I can restore a little bit of balance. Wish me luck!
