How I use facial sprays in my skincare routine

If you follow me on Instagram (she says flattering herself) you’ll know that I’ve been whinging about how winter has turned my (typically pretty good) skin into a desiccated husk and I ain’t happy. Cue Operation Glow!  I’ve been rooting around my skincare drawers – and have purchased another couple of hydrating bits – to see what I can do to rectify the damage and I’ve come up with a plan. Firstly, to be scrupulous when it comes to my skincare routine at night as I’ve been a bit lazy and relied on micellar waters, which just isn’t cutting the mustard in this weather. Secondly, to exfoliate regularly and thirdly, to roll out my collection of sprays as they are such a handy weapon in your skincare arsenal when hydration is the name of the game. So, if you’re looking to add a cheeky hydrating spritz into your routine read on for my thoughts on which setting sprays and hydrating mists are worth the hype and how I use facial sprays in my skincare routine.

Dermalogica Ultracalming Mist

This is my latest buy and I was inspired by watching Katie Jane Hughes (celeb makeup artist extraordinaire – she does THE best Stories) in action; she uses this on her clients (who have just got off a plane or have sensitized skin) as the step post cleansing and before moisturiser. I immediately went out and bought it as my skin is super sensitive and irritated at the moment and this sounded like a godsend. I’ve only been using it for a week or so but I’m really liking it; it doesn’t smell the greatest – in my opinion, others disagree – but feels hydrating and fresh and I like how moisturiser goes on afterwards. I’ve definitely noticed that my blotchy (oh so attractive bits!) have been dialed down with this so will keep using it. Liking a lot!

M.A.C Prep + Prime Fix+

Bloody love this stuff and am currently enjoying the coconut version of this cult classic. I particularly love its versatility; I use it before makeup if I feel that my skin needs a bit more moisture before going in with my foundation, particularly if it’s a stick or dryer formulation; in between layers of product to lock them in to place (I got that tip from the lovely Carrie Jaboor on Insta); over the top as the final spritz and step to lock in my makeup for the day. This is the spray that I also reach for when I’ve overdone powder products, or I feel that I’m looking too matte, as it gives a nice amount of ‘dew’.

Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray

This is a staple for when I want my makeup to stay put all day – if I have a day of meetings – or to keep my face in place for a night out when I’m probably going to be hot and sticky in a bar. For me this formulation is great for giving longevity, whereas I use Fix+ more for hydration. You can get a travel size (at Mecca) which is handy for a mid-day/evening freshen up which I love, and I’ve heard great things about the ‘De-slick’ formulation too if you’re on the oilier side and combatting different issues.

Mario Badescu Facial Spray With Aloe, Herbs & Rosewater

And last but certainly not least is this bad boy and at $10 it’s such a steal. I have the OG rosewater formulation but there are other ‘flavours’ e.g. aloe vera, cucumber and green tea for a more soothing option (for sensitive skin) so there’s something for everybody and it does what it says on the tin: the ultimate pick-me-up, refreshing, hydrating mist to use anytime, anywhere. This is my midafternoon spritz after a few hours staring at a screen or sitting in a heated room and is perfect; it’s no frills, cheap and cheerful and does the job.

So, there are my current faves.  I also have my eyes on Pixi’s Hydrating Milky Mist and Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir Spray as my obsession is now real!  Have you got any other recommendations? Which sprays are you loving right now?
