Collecting foundations is my absolute guilty pleasure; despite knowing that they have an expiration date, that I have one face and can’t possibly use them all up in time! But I just can’t help myself. The search for the holy grail that is the perfect base is real and I can’t imagine giving it up any time soon. And that’s not because I haven’t found foundations that I absolutely love, I have; it’s just that I’m the proverbial beauty magpie who loves shiny things and can’t resist the lure of new formulations and exciting new releases. That being said and having had a root around my foundation drawer over the weekend, I’ve realised that I have 5 bases on regular rotation at the moment, so in case you’re looking for inspiration and fancy a virtual peek in my foundation wardrobe, here are my 5 fave foundation picks to cover any occasion.
Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF 30 Mineral Gel
I’ve talked about this bad boy before and am still loving it and using it regularly. For me, it’s for good skin days when I just want a hint of something, or a lazy girl day when I’ve got literally 5 minutes to run out of the door to school drop off and don’t want to scare my mum mates by going bare faced. Because I’m nice like that! It’s light and mousse like and leaves my complexion looking nicely hydrated and a wee bit glowy; I love the face that it has a slight peach tint, as it evens out my skin tone, is super flattering and looks like you’re pulled together and have made a bit of effort. I’m such a fan!
Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation
Rising up the coverage stakes, my next fave is no surprise as I’ve talked to you about it before: it’s Charlotte Tilbury’s Light Wonder. This is my second tube and it’s become a firm favourite as it’s light, super glowy and can be thrown on in a couple of minutes and still look great. It’s on the lighter coverage side so I reach for this when my skin’s looking pretty good, when it’s a working from home day but I’m still in the mood to get my glow on or something like a girls’ lunch where I don’t want to get too heavy handed and need a day appropriate look. It reminds me of Mac Face & Body a little in that it’s runny and needs a good shake and I alternate between applying it with my Real Techniques Expert Face Brush or with my fingers; both give a natural, pretty finish. I can’t it recommend enough and if you fancy amping up the glow factor and injecting another dose of Charlotte Tilbury loveliness, combine it with her Hollywood Flawless Filter for a beautiful look!
IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Full Coverage Cream
Now I’ve seen this reach very full coverage – have a look at their website and see how it annihilates rosacea – and it can pack a serious punch, but I would say that I typically aim for more of a medium coverage when I use this by using a very small amount; a little goes a very long way so I apply it over a very moisturised base which sheers it out a little and gives a beautiful, ‘glow from within’ medium coverage that evens out my skin tone and redness but still looks natural and skin like. It comes in a pump dispenser which I love and has a lemony/citrusy scent which I find really refreshing. I don’t have a lot more to say about this base really other than it’s fab, I’m on tube number 4, will never be without it and would say that when I get compliments about my skin, am typically wearing this. I wear the original formulation, but it also now comes in an illuminating and matte finish so it’s great to see that they’ve evolved this cult product to suit differing needs and skin types.
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk
Talk about an oldie but a goodie. I wore this for many years in my 30s and it was a staple that I purchased and repurchased. I then drifted off to try other brands and have only recently bought myself another bottle and I’m so glad that I have. I reach for this on the days that I have meetings/am working onsite with a client and am going for a more polished look; it has a satin finish that holds up well during the working day and I like this for when I’m planning to wear powder bronzer and blush as they layer beautifully over the top of this, whereas I will typically reach for cream products when I’m wearing a dewier base. I apply this with a damp beautyblender to give a natural finish and will reach for my Sigma F80 (flat topped kabuki brush) or Real Techniques Buffing Brush if I want to build up the coverage a little more.
Too Faced Born This Way Foundation
And last but not least, my most full coverage foundation. I bought this when it first came out then promptly forgot about it, favouring my lighter coverage options, until I rediscovered it a few months ago and realised what a gem it is. Again, I’m a fan of less is more, so apply a small pump of this on to well moisturised skin and then bop it in with a beautyblender; it still gives a beautiful medium to full coverage but in the prettiest, most natural way. I find that this is one of those bases that improves with time and love it after it’s settled in a bit and melted into my skin. I do find that I need to set this with a wee swipe of powder across the t-zone (otherwise I’ll get a bit shiny after a few hours) but I’m more than happy to do that for this finish.
So those are my current fave foundations. What are yours?
